When there is a power trip at home. First thing is do not panic. Stay Calm.
Follow these steps to safely restore power and identify the root cause
Step 1: Locate and Identify the Tripped Switch
- Find the DB box: Locate your electrical distribution board (DB box), usually found near the main entrance or in the utility room.
- Identify the tripped breaker: Look for a switch that is in the OFF position or in the middle. Most other switches will be in the ON (up) position. If all the breaker is in the ON (up) position. There is another set of breaker usually outside the house where the watt meters are
- Watt Meter Circuit Breakers: A lot of people didn’t realize there is another set of breakers outside your house usually situated along the corridors or electrical Riser
- Burnt smell – Look out for any plastic burning smell or any abnormal heat from the circuit breaker
- Common Mistake when resetting the circuit breaker – Proper reset method
- Push all the circuit breaker down (off position)
- Push up the main incoming breaker first (usually situated in the far right of the breaker)
- 2nd push up the ELCB (RCCB) circuit breaker
- Slowly push up the MCB (individual circuit breaker) one after another slowly – interval of 2 sec each
If you are unable to reset the circuit breaker. Either it still trips or you are unable to reset. Proceed to Step 2
Step 2. Checking and Reset
- Unplugged all the socket from the wall outlet: Swithing off the power from your wall socket is not good enough. You need to physically remove the plug from the wall socket
- Turned off all the light switch, aircon switch and water heater switch. Make sure all electrical appliances are unhooked or turned off
- Go back to Step 1
If you are able to reset the circuit breaker. Good we are making some good progress. If you are stuck in Step 1 – you might need professional help.
Step 3. Troubleshoot and Diagnostic – Only If you are able to reset all the circuit breaker
- Slowly turn on all the electrical appliances one by one
- Start from the lights – most important you need visual
- Follow by Kitchen Appliances
- Water Heater
- Aircon

James is a very accomplished and knowledgeable electrician. To add to that he is extremely polite, super friendly and easy going. Our oven in our new apartment quit on us because of disuse, James was able to zero in on the issue in mins and was able to come fix it right away. My oven tripped, not the 1st time but the 3rd times. Up set with the company that I bought the oven from, decided to contact James.
James is a reliable and friendly guy who knows his job well. Gave me the choice of either replaced the parts or do a simple repair. Chosen to replace the parts after he explained the pros and cons.
James spent more than an hour to dismantle and fixed the parts, he is patience and knowledgeable. Well done and highly recommended.

Had a sudden short circuit and whole house was pitched dark at 11pm. Made an urgent call to James and he advised me on what to do and it worked! Even though I didn’t have to engage his service in the end, he was very helpful and friendly. I’ll definitely engage him in future whenever needed. 🙂
